What is Hastelloy?

How is Hastelloy made?

Hastelloy is a metal alloy that is produced by incorporating raw elements in the hot liquid state. Hastelloy comes in varied grades, each containing a specific chemical composition. After the metals are mixed, fused, and mixed together they can be cast accordingly for further manufacturing.

What is Hastelloy used for?

Since Hastelloy is created for outstanding corrosion resistance, it is a great choice for use in environments that are exposed to corrosive environments moderately or severely, especially when the life of a product is important.

Hastelloy is generally used for pipes and valves in the chemical and petrochemical industries as well as reactor vessels in the chemical and nuclear industries. Hastelloy C276 is known to have excellent resistance to cracking from stress corrosion, pitting, and oxidizing. Hence it is used in atmospheres up to 1000 °C.

Hastelloy fasteners are used in many aerospace engineering, welding, and chemical processing applications. Some of the main industries that use Hastelloy fasteners are used for are-

  1. Aerospace: Hastelloy has a high creep resistance and low expansion at elevated temperatures, making it ideal for aerospace applications.

  2. Chemical Processing: Chemical processing, one of the most extensive manufacturing industries in the United States, is known for producing a vast range of everyday products. Hastelloy fasteners are used in the industry to build equipment parts in reactors, like columns, piping systems, pressure vessels, and heat exchangers. Owing to their excellent resistance to corrosion, Hastelloy can defy many of the daily chemical reactions that take place in these facilities.

  3. Oil and Gas applications: Oil and gas wells in this industry are exposed to high pressure and high temperatures like offshore drilling operations. This is where Hastelloy C-22HS comes into play. Hastelloy C-22HS is known to perform at maximum chemical resistance, hardness, and yield strength specifications currently used in the industry.

  4. Power Generation: One of the main uses for Hastelloy worldwide is in industrial gas turbines. Hastelloy is used in nearly all parts of a gas turbine like the rings, seals, and shrouds for the combustors, hot section, and exhausts. Hastelloy can also be used to reduce emissions and improve the efficiency of coal-powered plants by using Advanced Ultra supercritical systems.

What is Incoloy?

Incoloy fasteners comprise nickel, iron, and chromium as their primary alloying materials. Incoloy is an economical option when it comes to fasteners. It is an ideal material for long-term exposure to high-temperature environments due to its oxidation, carburization, and creep resistance.

Incoloy is widely used for its resistance to seawater, brine, sour gas, and high chloride environments at elevated temperatures, which makes it a popular choice in the oil and gas, and power industries.

What is Incoloy used for?

Incoloy is available in many grades, some of which were specifically designed for high-temperature applications. In general, Incoloy is not suitable for severely corrosive environments, but some grades have been designed for increased corrosion resistance, even in harsh environments. Incoloy grade alloys contain chromium and nickel as their preliminary base elements. Incoloy contains less than 50% of nickel, but also contains iron in their alloys.

Incoloy’s high-temperature strength and resistance to seawater, brine, sour gas, and chloride make it ideal for use in the oil and gas industries. Incoloy is also employed used in hot vessels for food and water,  aircraft, propeller shafts, chemical processing equipment, gas turbines, and tank trucks.
